Making our wish-list this week is Naoto Fukasawa’s Piccola Papilio chair. With over 50 awards under his belt and a career to turn even the most committed designers green (his CD player for Muji is part of the permanent collection at MOMA) this little stunner works hard in big or small spaces.
Designed to be viewed as a single form made from a single material the armchair was to represent the pinnacle of relaxation. In fact, in the words of Fukasawa he hoped it would be reminiscent of ‘a big soft toy’. He goes on to say,
‘I wanted this kind of chair to look obviously comfortable – to have the kind of shape that “relaxation” might take if it were portrayed in a picture. There had to be something encompassing’.
Fukasawa’s has worked with the following Italian companies; B&B Italia (who the Piccola Papilio was designed for and can be purchased from), Driade, Magis, Artemide, Danese, Boffi and Brix as well as German and North European companies. His designs range from umbrellas and vases to sofas, mobile phones, packaging and porcelain floor tiles (The Linen Collection available from Surface Tiles).
